Abrabopa Cocoa Ltd. to Pilot Mobile Money Payments in Mankranso for the 2026/27 Cocoa Season

The management of Abrabopa Cocoa Ltd., led by Patrick van Brakel, met with cocoa industry stakeholders to introduce a digital approach to paying for cocoa purchases through mobile money.

The engagement focused on how digital payments can make cocoa purchasing safer, faster and more accountable. Patrick explained that reducing the movement of physical cash can help protect farmers, purchasing teams and other people involved in cocoa transactions from avoidable security risks and attacks.

He described the initiative as a first of its kind within the Ghanaian cocoa purchasing space and encouraged participants to embrace the change. In addition to improving personal safety, digital payments can provide clearer transaction records, quicker confirmation of payment and stronger support for financial reconciliation.

Pilot rollout in the Mankranso operational area

Abrabopa Cocoa Ltd. will pilot the mobile money payment system in the Mankranso operational area during the 2026/27 cocoa season. The pilot will allow the company to test the process under real purchasing conditions, support users and review transaction procedures before considering a wider rollout.

He noted that this transaction history may help banks assess farmers when considering loan applications and other financial services. Digital payment records do not guarantee approval, but they can help farmers demonstrate the value and consistency of their cocoa sales.

Fast and efficient account transfers

A representative from Ecobank joined the meeting to explain how efficiently money can move from one account to another through approved digital channels. Participants were taken through the speed and convenience of the process, with completed transfers capable of reaching the recipient within minutes.

The presentation showed how mobile money and account based transfers can reduce payment delays while giving recipients greater confidence that funds have been sent directly to their accounts.

The way forward for cocoa purchasing

Winston also addressed the participants and reinforced the message that digital settlement is the direction cocoa purchasing must take. He encouraged industry players to support the transition and recognise the benefits it offers across the supply chain.

The meeting marked an important step in building understanding around digital cocoa payments. As the Mankranso pilot begins in the 2026/27 cocoa season, Abrabopa Cocoa Ltd. will continue engaging stakeholders, with attention to transaction verification, payment accountability and practical support for users.
